On your mark, get set, go! The holiday gift-buying games have begun and it’s a competitive year. Not since the likes of Tickle Me Elmo have we seen such a run on gifts so early in the season. So load up on these fantastic favourites now to avoid some tough explaining in December.

Elmo Evolution
Our little Elmo has gone from tickles to rocking it with this amazing toy that sings and plays a variety of instruments. Wee ones can play along too and be in the band with the big “E”. Expect a lot of belly laughs. Ages 18 months to 4 years.

Sesame Street Let’s Rock! Elmo, $75. Available at www.toysrus.ca

Made for Walking
Wow, the Littlest Pet Shop never stops with awesome add-ons. This time the pets can walk on their own, and they’re having fun in a tree house with lots of actions and secrets. Tree house + kids = true love (Trust us. We had to buy two). Ages 5 to 7 years.

Littlest Pet Shop Magic Motion Walkables Pet Tree House Playset, $40. Available at toysrus.

We Are the Champions
Want a safe bet for a holiday gift? Trust any of the Lego games. We love this new one for building challenges and the chance to be proclaimed “Lego Champion!” Ages 7 years and up.

LEGO Champion Game, $45. Available at www.mastermindtoys.com.

Fun Fijit
They’re cute, creative and cool – plus they recognize a multitude of phrases and chat with their human friends! Paste a photo of Justin Bieber over their adorable faces and our little girl is halfway to heaven. Ages 6 to 11 years.

Fijit Friends, $70. Available at www.chapters.indigo.ca.

Fine Feathered Friends
Oh addictive Angry Birds, how the kids love thee. Well, they’ve come to life outside of the iPad with this game that’s fun, engaging and just a teensy bit destructive for the whole crew. Ages 5 years and up.

Angry Birds Knock on Wood Game, $30. Available at http://fgbradleys.com

Resourceful Barbie
We wanted to resist the latest Barbie offering. But we succumbed to the charms of Princess Charm School Blair as she takes one outfit and wears it in three fabulous ways. Sigh. Smitten again. Ages 4 to 7 years.

Barbie Princess Charm School Blair Doll, $30. Available at www.toysrus.ca.

Rad Racer
It’s a car, it’s a video camera, it’s a way for your little daredevil to capture his most awesome tricks, frame by frame, and play back the footage immediately to see if all that awesomeness was captured. With the included clips and straps, it can be attached to helmets, bikes and skateboards, so look out, Tony Hawk! Ages 5 years and up.

Hot Wheels Video Racer Micro Camera Car, $80. Available at www.toysrus.ca.

Pretty in Pink
These My Little Pony baby dolls are so cute we almost find ourselves looking after them! Complete with a bottle, snack and pacifier, our little one is consumed with taking care of her baby pony. Plus, they say the darnedest things – pinkie swear. Ages 3 to 7 years.

My Little Pony So Soft Pinkie Pie, $40. Available at www.sears.ca.

Very Vinyl
Mystery collectible toys are all the rage these days, and the vinylmation robots and other series from the Disney Store are full of great details and fantastic colours. We admit to being on tenterhooks as each mystery box is opened and we assess the prize. Makes a great must-have stocking stuffer. Ages 3 years and up.

Vinylmation Robots, $10. Available at www.disneystore.com.

Tangled Up
Everything Tangled is red-hot this season, and this tower play set is likely to be the fairest of them all (we may be mixing our fairly tales). Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Ages 3 years and up.

Tangled Rapunzel Tower Play Set, $40. Available at www.disneystore.com.
