Whether it was drinking hot cocoa by the fireplace, baking cookies, or building snowmen in the backyard, our childhood holiday memories leave us feeling fuzzy to this day. That’s why we’re taking a look back at some of the best holiday moments.
Through a Child’s Eyes
When I was little I always looked forward to the holidays because it meant time off from school and time spent with my family. Now I look forward to the small pockets of time we carve out of a busy schedule spent with family and friends. I now also look forward to seeing my son’s face light up every time he does one of our many traditions; visiting with Santa, decorating the tree, wrapping presents, baking cookies and of course, opening presents. Christmas is all about him now, and seeing it all through his eyes, which to me is what it is priceless. – Jennifer Hamilton, SweetMama Editor
Family Time
As a kid, the obvious response would be the presents but I also loved it if it snowed on Christmas Eve and I loved seeing all of my cousins.
The thing I look forward to the most over the holidays is actually intangible. It’s a feeling of togetherness among friends and family alike. I love the music, décor, holiday movies and wearing layers! – Erica Dymond, iVillage.ca Senior Producer
Beautiful Ballerinas
During the holidays, I always look forward to watching The National Ballet of Canada perform The Nutcracker. I was obsessed with my VHS copy of the ballet when I was younger, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when Santa Claus gave me with tickets to see it live. Now, it’s a family tradition to see it every year – except now I’m gifting the tickets! – Madelyn Chung, Syndicated Content Associate Editor
Peaking at Presents
My parents weren’t very creative when it came to hiding Christmas presents. They were always tucked into the chest at the foot of their bed. So from a very young age, I knew where they’d be “hidden” but I also knew that I wasn’t supposed to know. To split the difference between temptation and being good, I would allow myself to sneak-a-peak at just one present – leaving the rest of them to be a surprise. – Emma Yardley, Associate Editor
Sifting through Stockings
When I was growing up, my favourite part of the holidays was always waking up super-duper early and sneaking downstairs to open my stocking. My mother – I mean, Santa – always made the best Christmas stockings, and there was something very magical about being awake and digging into all those little gifts while the rest of the family was still asleep. I still get really, really excited about opening up my stocking every year. – Gabrielle Johnson, SweetLife Editor
